German tuba in B flat, Tornistertuba, 20 inches high
Model:
This is a tuba that has the full range like a large tuba. You can play down to A flat (I mean subcontra A flat pedal tone) and lower, depending on player's skill.
Due to the smaller bore high notes can be played rather easy. Very low notes (below contra F) will also play well but not as easy as on a tuba with a very large bore.
This size is called a "Tornistertuba". It was originally an invention of F. Cerveny from Austro-Hungarian Bohemia (the founder of the well-known Cerveny company) around 1900. It was designed to be worn in a backpack and be carried easily.
Just to make it really clear: It is a contrabass tuba, not an Euphonium mocked as a tuba.
Sound and intonation are very good despite the small size.
Manufacturer:
The instrument is all German made. It does not have a "Globalized" flavour. Also bell and machine come from Germany. This has been produced by one of the few last brass craftsmen ("Meister") in Germany who produce tubas in their shop. This is not a industrial serial model with large numbers produced, but will be produced on request and has been manufactured according to the tornister tuba model to my specifications.
The standard model would not be silver plated nor have the nickel silver tubes and mouthpipe.
Sizes:
- Size: 20.08 inches (51 cm) high
- Bell diameter: 9.45 (24 cm)
- Bore: (at tuning slide) 0,55 (14 mm)
- Weight: about 10 lb. (4,9 kg)
Material:
- Nickel silver for all tubes from mouthpipe to tuning slide
- Brass for the rest. Silver plated.
Nickel silver machine (valve casings and valve top screw nickel silver, inner valve head brass - ideal combination for better sound and less wear)
- 4 rotary valves, Minibal joints
Original delivery date: September 2010. I am the first owner of the instrument and have played it about 10 hours since.
No dents, smooth and silent mechanics.
What's included:
The tuba.
A large mouthpiece from the original manufacturer (34 mm inner diameter, VERY deep bore, produres large sound). A second Tuning slide which allows to tune it lower (It came originally with this longer tuning slide, but I have a rather loose embouchure, so I had a smaller one manufactured, you see the smaller one on the pictures).
